Brief History of the Center

The Foreign Language Teaching Resource Center was established as the Language Laboratory in 1963, with Father Franz Giet (SVD) serving as the founding director. While initially only providing language training in the English and German languages, we have been increasing our array of services in step with the expansion of the College of Foreign Languages and Literatures (CFL hereafter).

The audio tape library was set up in 1982 and was then followed by an audio-visual language center in 1989. The center established word processing centers at the CFL in 1991 to provide network services, computer learning, and services in audiovisual and multimedia fields. In 1997, we transferred the computer learning and network components to the Computer Center that services the Colleges of Science and Engineering, Human Ecology, and Foreign Languages and Literatures. The center was renamed the Multi-Media Center,, and was responsible for managing language classrooms, audio-visual equipment, and multimedia teaching materials for those three colleges.

Construction on the distance learning classrooms, and facilities for multimedia production such as the recording room and studio was completed in 1999, and opened to members of the university in May of that year. These facilities are located in the Divine Word Academic High-Rise. In August of 1999 we combined the language labs and audiovisual classrooms that were originally used for foreign language courses offered by the Holistic Education Center, and in May of 2010, the center became the Foreign Language Teaching Resource Center, the name by which it goes by today.

In addition to managing all equipment and facilities for language lectures on campus, the center has embraced the new era which demands multimedia and distance learning. As we move into the future, the center will remain committed to promoting the use of innovative technology in teaching.
